Engineering leadership for the AI era
A CTO in the room — part-time, and on the hook.
For founders and CEOs who need senior engineering leadership now — not a nine-month search. I own the technical direction, the team, and delivery, at the fraction you actually need.
What I own
- Technical strategy & architecture. The roadmap, the hard build-vs-buy calls, and the direction the whole team builds toward.
- The engineering team. Hiring, structure, mentoring, and the standards that make delivery predictable instead of heroic.
- Delivery & velocity. Shipping on a cadence your customers and investors can count on.
- Security & reliability posture. The risks that stay invisible until they become existential.
- The board conversation. Translating engineering into terms your directors and investors can act on.
- AI as an advantage, not a liability. Using modern tooling to move fast — without building something no one on the team can maintain.
When a fractional CTO fits
- You have engineers, but no senior leader to point them.
- You’re between CTOs and can’t afford the gap.
- You’re a technical founder who needs to get back to product and customers.
- You’re a portfolio company that needs a steady technical hand after investment.
How it works
An ongoing engagement, structured around what you need — typically a set commitment each week, fully remote. I’m accountable, not advisory: in the room, owning outcomes. Scope and terms are negotiated to fit.
Who I am
Nearly thirty years in engineering leadership — CTO, VP Engineering, and principal-level roles. Most recently at Amazon, leading five AI-capability acquisitions for AWS; before that, CTO at Woot.com and founding Seattle site engineering leader at Twitch. Decades in, I still build production software myself — Get Camino, empty repo to shipped product in under a week. Computer Engineering, USC. Based in southern Spain; work is fully remote. Engagements are conducted in English.
