The funnel filed the complaints
1,200 views, two finished journeys, zero errors — and a funnel far less polite than the users. What the analytics said that a week of my own taste had missed.
The first strangers to use Get Camino didn’t file a single complaint. The funnel filed several.
One plainly-disclosed post in a moving-to-Spain community: about 1,200 views, two complete stranger journeys — first visit to finished roadmap, one in English, one in Spanish — zero user-facing errors. Then the post was auto-removed as suspected self-promotion. A clean, humbling first contact.
The analytics were less polite than the users:
- The worst question in the interview — most misunderstood, most retried — was being asked second.
- Median completion: 7.2 minutes, against a landing page that promised three.
- The intent data: visitors from Reddit finished at roughly sixty percent. From LinkedIn, zero of seventeen. (You’re the peer group, not the funnel — and that finding shaped the marketing, not just the product.)
So the interview was rebuilt around one rule from the build log: every question must earn its place. Each one now traces to the roadmap steps it unlocks — and one question, audited, had quietly been feeding nothing. Deleted. Answers became taps instead of typing. The roadmap now builds live on screen while you answer, so the payoff is visible from question one.
One discipline made the verdict trustworthy: every analytics event is version-stamped. The redesign reports against its own numbers — it doesn’t get to grade its homework using the old exam.
Opinions were available all week, mine loudest of all. The funnel outranked us.
